Mental health continuum is a range where mental health and mental illness are the two extreme ends.  Depending on the internal and external resources of a person at any time, he/she can lie at one point of the continuum and shift position as his/her situation improves or deteriorate.

People who lie at the healthy point are generally satisfied and happy in their lives, emotionally well-balanced, stable and goal-oriented.  People who lie at the mid range of the continuum may show some distress and inability to cope, but are capable of performing daily life functions.  Counselling can help these people learn to cope better and prevent him/her to go down the continuum towards the disorder point / mental illness.  People who lie at the disorder point are unable to cope with stress and exhibit significant changes in their thoughts, behavious and actions.

People who are closer to the end of mental illness may require medications to help them stabilize their condition.  Whether one requires medications or not, counselling helps the person in understanding and managing his/her condition better, discovering his/her inner and outer resources, and brainstorming the suitable coping strategies.
